I almost always wear some sort of
headwear, whether it is hot and sunny,
windy and rainy, or cold and miserable.
Again, I went a little overboard on the
types of headwear I brought along, but
each has its own place, depending on the
current conditions.
Outdoor Research Seattle Sombrero

The Seattle Sombrero is a windproof,
rainproof, Gore-Tex hat designed for
keeping you dry. I wore it the one day
it rained on the trek, and it served me
well. What I like about wearing it is
that you don't have to use the hood on
your hard shell when it rains. This
makes the hard shell more comfortable as
there is more ventilation (from the
neck), and you can hear better, as the
shell hood is not blocking your hearing.
I only wear the Sombrero when it is
raining, as it can be a little bit warm
to wear when the sun is shining. But
this is to be expected for any Gore-Tex
rain hat.
This very durable hat is also very
packable, and easily fits into your
daypack, ready for use when it begins to
pour.
Tilley T3
Hat

When the sun it out, and you need
protection from its rays, the Tilley T3
hat can't be beat. This strong, durable,
comfortable hat was the perfect
companion on the Tour du Mont Blanc. The
breathability of the fabric, the
ventilation holes, and the built-in
sweat ban helped to ensure the hat
wasn't too warm.
Outdoor Research Hat for All Seasons

This Gore-Tex, modular hat is also
very versatile, allowing you to wear the
shell by itself, or to combine it with
its fleece liner. On this particular
trip, it was to warm to wear the liner
(I didn't even bring it with me), but I
did wear the shell a lot.
There are three particular reasons it
worked well for this trek. First, the
shell by itself wasn't too hot, except
for the warmest days on the trek, and
then I wore the Tilley T3. Second, it's
large bill protected me from the sun.
And third, the ear flaps can be used or
not used, depending on the conditions.
When it was cool or windy, I used the
flaps to protect my overly sensitive
ears.
Outdoor Research Ear Band

On some occasions, especially when I
was very active, but the wind was cold,
I wore my Outdoor Research Ear Band. The
advantage of this is that it protects
your ears, but without making you too
hot. Heat can escape from your head,
helping you to keep cooler. On a couple
of occasions, I wore the Ear Band along
with the Tilley T3 hat. That way, I my
ears were kept warm, and the sun was
kept off my face and neck.
