Selecting the right socks for hiking,
trekking, mountaineering, or adventure
travel is a crucial decision. Pick the
wrong ones, and your trip could be a
torture. But pick the right socks, and
your feet will thank you. Over the
years, I have tried a lot of different
socks, and by far the best are the
Adventure Series from Smartwool. This
includes three different models:
- Adventure Light Hiker: Provides
lightweight cushioning for warm
weather activity.
- Adventure Hiker: Provides heavier
cushioning for cool weather activity,
or just when you want more cushioning
that that provided by the Light Hiker.
- Adventure Trekker: Provides even
heavier cushioning, warmth, and
protection for cold weather activity.
As you can see, each type of sock has
a slightly different application,
although you don't have to use them like
their are described. If you want to wear
the Light Hiker for trekking, or if you
want to wear the Adventure Hiker for
mountaineering, that would be just fine.
While each different sock has a
slightly different material, they all
have the following in common:
- Contains Merino wool as the main
fabric. As you may know, Merino wool
is the finest and softest wool
available. Some of its characteristics
include that it is itch-proof; warm or
cool, as the needs dictate; retains
warmth even when wet; relatively fast
drying; wicks away moisture from your
feet; provides a springy cushioning
effect for comfort; and it minimizes
odor. The socks are a blend of Merino
wool, nylon, and elastic. Different
socks have different blends.
- All the socks have flat seams so
that seams won't rub against your
foot, potentially causing blisters or
other irritation.
- A waffle knit instep helps to keep
your foot ventilated and reduces the
overall weight of the sock.
Any of these socks can be worn alone,
or with a liner sock if you so desire.
Using the
Smartwool Adventure Socks in the Real
World
I have used all three different types
of Smartwool Adventure socks in all
conceivable weather conditions, and they
have never disappointed me.
In very hot weather, I wear the Light
Hikers because they are not as warm. I
even wear then when the temperatures
exceed 90 degrees, and they are very
comfortable. Moisture is wicked off your
foot, keeping your skin dry. And when
you are taking a break, you can remove
the socks and they will quickly dry,
especially if there is a breeze. Odor
has never been a problem, even after
wearing a pair for multiple days (I'm
too ashamed to tell you how many days).
When the weather is a little cooler,
or when I want extra cushioning, I wear
the Hikers. These are just a little big
thicker than the Light Hikers, and work
well in warm or cool weather.
In colder weather, generally, 30
degrees or cooler, I like the Trekkers.
They provide plenty of warmth and
comfort.
Keep in mind when selecting any
socks, not just these ones, that the
thickness of the sock may affect how
comfortable your boots are. If your
boots tend to be a little snug, you
might be better off with the Light
Hikers only. The only way to know for
sure is to try these socks with your
boots.
Recommendation
I recommend the Smartwool Adventure
socks for all occasions. In fact, I no
longer wear anything else, even at work.
The only thing that keeps the Smartwool
Adventure socks from being perfect is
that they wear out, just as any sock
will. Now, if only Smartwool can figure
a way around this problem!
Product
Notes
The Smartwool Adventure socks are
available in a variety of sizes and
colors. The manufacturer's suggested
retail price varies from $14.95 to
$16.95. If these models don't suit your
needs, Smartwool also offers a variety
of other socks that probably will,
although I have not tested them. |
