There are two kind of people who wear
sandals. The first, like me, only wear
them under certain conditions, such as
hot weather, around camp, or when
fording streams. The second wear them
almost all the time, no matter what the
conditions. No matter which group you
fall into, the Z/1 Torreno Sandals from
Chaco will serve you well. You may not
think there is much difference among
sandals, but this is not the case.
Sandals vary widely in their features.
Here's what separates the Chaco Z/1
Torreno's from the rest:
- They come in both normal and wide
widths. If you have normal feet, you
probably don't care. But if you have
wide feet, this is a big deal. Very,
very few companies make wide sandals.
- The Torreno's are very easy to
adjust to your feet. There is only one
strap to deal with, and it can be
adjusted most anyway you like. This
greatly adds to comfort. Also, there
is no big toe strap. I know some
people like these because it can add
stability to a sandal, but I hate them
because they are so uncomfortable.
- The sandal's sole is Vibram rubber
with heavy-duty lugs for increased
traction on dirt and in the water.
- The foot bet is not flat, as you
find with many sandals. Instead, it is
formed to fit your feet, and it
includes arch support. This greatly
adds to the sandal's comfort.
- They weigh just over 2 pounds.
These sandals are appropriate for
hiking, fastpacking, water sports,
around camp, around town, and most any
place where a sandal is appropriate.
Using the
Chaco Z/1 Torreno Sandals in the Real World
I have wide feet, so finding a pair
of wide sandals is great. When I first
tried them on, I noticed immediately how
well they felt, as compared to many
other sandals I had tried. In many ways,
they have the fit and feel of a hiking
boot, without the weight or insulation.
When you first get them, it takes a
little bit of time to get used to how
you adjust the strap to make the sandals
best fit your feet, but once you get the
hang of it, it is easy to do.
Because the Torreno's have a strong
tread, they make it easy to walk most
trails, gripping the ground well. The
same is true when wading in the water.
When I am hiking, and expect to ford
a lot of streams, I will attach the
sandals on the outside of my pack,
keeping them close at hand when I need
them. Sure, I could wear them all the
time, instead of my boots, but I am not
that type of sandal wearer.
Recommendation
If you have a need for sandals, and
if you have normal or wide feet, the
Torreno Z/1 sandals from Chaco are hard
to beat.
